Description

Milan, Basilica of St. Ambrose, detail of the backside of the so-called sarcophagus of Stilicho. From upper left to lower right, the three young Jews refusing to worship the statue of the king of Babylonia, Nebuchadnezzar II, and thus being sentenced to death into the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:1-56); the portrait busts of the deceased couple, inside a clipeus hold by two winged Genii; Adoration of the Kings; Christ sitting amidst the Apostles, giving them the mission to preach the Gospel worldwide (Missio apostolorum). At Christ's feet, the two figures could be identified with the deceased Stilicho and his wife Serena.
