Description
The Acropolis head apparently belonged to a freestanding portrait statue, most probably dressed with tunic and pallium; it was discovered near the so-called House of Proklos on the South Slope of Acropolis. High-quality piece, made of Hymettian marble. It depicts an elderly man with wide-staring eyes, long beard, moustache and downward flowing long hair wreathed with laurel. Dates proposed for this head range from ca. 300 to ca. 430.
