The construction of the basilica began by Saint Epiphanius around 400 AD and was completed after his death in 403. Originally the basilica was built as a seven-aisled structure with narthex and atrium and its floor was covered with mosaics. After its reconstruction in the 6th century, the basilica turned into a five-aisled structure and its floor was covered with large rectangular slabs. At the eastern side of the basilica there is a baptistery consisting of several rooms for baptismal ceremonies. |
