Christ's Descent into Hades is described in Nicodemus apocryphal gospel. Its central vertical axis shows Christ, dressed in white, now in 'another form'. He is flanked by the other figures, distributed between two equal groups. John holds a scroll with this inscription in capital letters:' So that he may bring forth those form Hades'.
