Abraham, obeying God's commandment, bare knife in hand, is ready to slaughter his only son, Isaac. The latter is shown lying on the ground, bound hand and feet, as his father lifts the boy's head upwards, ready for the sacrifice. An Angel of the Lord appears in the left corner to stop the slaughter.
