Title: | Holy Bishopric of Morphou: The Annunciation, Church of the Virgin Podithou in Galata, | Start date: | 1502 | End date: | 1502 | Historical Period: | Post-Byzantine | Description: | The first step in the Incarnation is the Annunciation of the Virgin. To the left is depicted the Archangel Gabriel, in vigorous mid-stride, his right arm extended in blessing, bringing the divine message of the birth of Jesus Christ. Mary is on the right, seated on a carved throne with rounded back. The expressive gestures and the sudden movements of her body show her surprise on hearing the words of the archangel. Both forms are situated in front of complex buildings that have late Gothic and Renaissance elements. |
