Title: Holy Bishopric of Morphou: St George and St John the Baptist, Church of the Holy Virgin in Moutoullas
Start date: 1280
End date: 1280
Historical Period: Late Byzantine Period
Description:

The scene with St George is of considerable dimension, than any other fresco in the church, a fact which reveals the special veneration of the saint. St George was depicted as a young, beardless and brave warrior with curly hair, riding a white, robust host, galloping to the right. Repeated white crosses inscribed in rectangular frames decorate the black band strapped around the belly of the horse. A white inscription with capital letter accompanies the saint with hia military harness underlining the place of his origin '' St George th Cappadocian''. A rectangular, richly decorated shield is visble behind his back. His iron armos is depicted with a detailed drawning in an effort to present it in the most naturalistic way. The saint holds in his left hand the bit reins of the horse and strikes with a spear in his right hand the mouth of a man-shaped dragon, who is jinhing out under the horse. The man-shaped dragon, which is lying on the ground, holds with both his hands the edge of the spear, trying to avoid the strike in his opened mouth. The face of John the Baptist is totally damaged. The full-length, standing saint with his abundant, neatly arranged locks of hair is turning to the right. He wears a grey tunic with a black sign on the right part and an olive-green himitation. He is raising his right hand in a gesture of supplication and holds in his left hand an opened scroll with the text: '' Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand''.
