Title: Holy Bishopric of Morphou: The Holy Virgin, Church of the Holy Virgin in Moutoullas
Start date: 1280
End date: 1280
Historical Period: Late Byzantine Period
Description:

On the flat surfaces od the wall below the pediment, interrupted by the apse, the composition of the Annunciation was depicted. On the left side stands the damaged figure of the archangel Gabriel. An inscription with big white letters in three verses, placed in the lower right side contains the words, which he addressed to the Holy Virgin: '' +Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lords is with you''. She is depicted in three-quarter profile turning to the left and she raised her left hand spinning the purple silk, while the silk is ending to her right hand, which has been destroyed. She is looking at the archangel, while three rays fall upon her, symbolize the triune nature of God of the Christian Deity and underline the immaculate conception of the Holy Virgin. The red maphorium of the Holy Virgin is decorated with white, scross-shaped stars, insisted by low relief lines, that imply the virginity of Mary. Next to mary a fountain in a perspective drawning with a horizontal basin can be seen, having a spout in the form of two naturalistic depicted snakes turned around each other. From their half-opened mouths is flowing water split into three parts, while sunshine next to them is directed to the Holy Virgin.
