Authors: | Goul, Philippos | Title: | Holy Bishopric of Morphou: The Archangel Michael, The Abbot Zosimas and St Mary of Egypt, Church of the Holy Cross of Ayiasmati (2-2, 22,31, 32) | Description: | Archangel Michael with his abundant neatly arranged locks of hair retained by a fine white fillet and the strong highlights and pink blush on his cheeks, he respires an exquisite, delicate nobility. He carries a staff in his right hand and holds in his left a grisaille figure of Christ Emmanuel in a medallion. His open wings of peacock feathers embellish the surface of the arched recess. The spandrels of the blind arch are occupied by the separate figures of St Mary of Egypt and the Abbot Zosimas. Mary, her body wasted by ascesis and sensing her impending death, hastens towards Zosimas, who hurries along to offer her communication. |
