Historical Period: Late Byzantine Period
Description:

Bowl. Fine-grained reddish buff fabric. Raised conical base with wide ring. Carinated form, high vertical rim with everted lip. A coat of white slip covers the bowlinside and out. Inside the bowl, the circular field is adorned with a knight, slightly turned to his left, brandishing a shield and a sword. Below the rim is a narrow band with a zigzag row of leaves. On the outside, the straight walls of the rim are decorated with a wide border enclosing a double-braid motif with small rosettes in the loops. The incised-sgraffito decoration is livened up with splashes of brownish-yellow and green paint. A bright yellowish glazing covers both the interior and exterior surfaces of the vase, which is a product of the Lapithos pottery workshops.
