Description

The throne of Archbishop Maximian is composed of twenty-two ivory panels framed by ivory bands with plant and animal motifs.
In the front St. John the Baptist and the four Evangelists are represented. The sides show biblical stories from the life of Joseph. In the back scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin are depicted.
It is possible that the origin of throne is from Constantinople.
The production of the throne, wherever it was made, has been attributed to four different artists. One of them has carved decorative bands.
