Description

The scene is based on apocryphal texts and is depicted in a horizontal setting. The Holy Virgin is crossing her arms on her waist, while her body is placed in the first level on a red bed with a luxury apron decorated with precious stones and pearls in continuous boards. On a small table with a semicircular base in front of the bed stands a white jar without handles, decorated with black lines offering a rare iconographic feature. Two groups of the apostles pluged in grief, as their faces and gestures display, arriving from;; every corner of the earth''. Peter, depicted with the characteristic curly white hair, is standing on the left side holding a censer in his hand. On the other side stands John, whose name is written in ligature, is bending over the dead body holding with his left hand the bed and supporting with his right hand and his closed fingers his head, underling the grief. Andrew and Paul can be identified, standing behind him, while only the heads of two further disciples have remained intact. In the center, behind the bed, Jesus is standing in a red mandorla holding the soul of Mary, depicted in the form of an infant in swaddle clothes. The remains of a winged angel descending to receive the soul of Mary are visible on the upper right part of the composition. Behind the head of the Holy Virgin are standing two prelates, whose upper part has not been preserved.
