The main scene on the sarcophagus depicts the Niobids’ massacre; the figure in the left is Artemis, her arrows pierce four of Niobe’s daughters while Niobe herself and a nurse bear two young dying girls. On the right , Apollo’s arrows hit four Niobids. In the center of the scene an old pedagogue tries to save the youngest Niobid. On the upper part, the fourteen bodies of the Niobids lying on the soil. The sarcophagus was found on the Via Appia (Rome).
