Start date: 1200
End date: 1299
Historical Period: Western Middle Ages
Description:

Florence - Baptistery. The Birth of St John, detail of the mosaic of the Cupola (XIII century). Attributed to Cimabue by Toesca; the face of the young before Zaccaria appears particularly stringent with works of the artist, as also confirmed by Berenson and by Salmi (who still attributes the whole scene). The young man's face looks very similar to a head in the scene of Crucifixion of the left transept of the upper basilica of Assisi, with almost identical nose, hair and ear. Minor are the analogies with the face of S. John in the apse of the Cathedral of Pisa. ((Ed.ne Alinari) Νο 17242)
