Titolo: | Holy Bishopric of Morphou: Church of the Virgin Podithou in Galata | Estremo cronologico iniziale: | 1502 | Estremo cronologico finale: | 1502 | Periodo storico: | Post-Byzantine | Descrizione: | The church is situated among rich vegetation in the valley of Solea, a short distance from the village Galata. The nickname Podithou was given perhaps from the scene of Moses who removes his sandals before the Burnig Bush. It belongs to the type of single-cell church with a large steep pitched toimber roof and surrounded by a cosed ambulatory on its three sides. It is of relatively large proportions and is of rectangular shape with the apse of the sanctuary slightly protruding to the east. The church is decorated with remarkable 16th century wall-paintings, typical examples of the style of Cypriot painting that has been named the 'Italo-Byzantine School'. |
